Book Review | Resenha - The lost memoirs of Jane Austen | As memórias perdidas de Jane Austen

Title: The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen.
Author: Syrie James.

Hey folks,
I’m so excited to talk about this book that I don’t even know how to begin! J
Well, you all know that I am a Jane Austen’s fan and this book is all that any of her fans could wish to read.
I have to admit that I got to know this book thanks to my beloved sister who talked about it to me. Some time passed by until I got a chance to have an exemplar.
What interested me the most was the fact that James could thoroughly echo Jane’s style of writing. Besides, all dates were amazingly accurate which gives us the idea that we are reading more than a novel, but a biography.
The book is filled with interesting notes that link the events of the story and how they possibly influenced Jane’s writing. The notes also give us real information about Jane’s books, events of her life and customs of the time.
Although the novel intertwines facts of Jane’s life with fiction you have the feeling you are reading Jane Austen herself due to the great job done by the author Syrie James.

Summary:
Imagine a missing manuscript of Jane Austen is found in England. This is when the amazing and challenging job of the author begins.
The memoirs begin around the time of Jane’s father death. After retiring from the ministry, Mr. Austen and his family moved to a house in Bath. However, when he dies, Jane, her sister Cassandra and their mother are left homeless and penniless. Even with the financial support given by her brothers, Jane wishes her books could also be a source of income for her family.
Persuaded by one of her brothers Jane travels to Lyme where she meets the charming and witful Mr. Ashford. They come to find out that his temperament and intellect are on a par with those of Jane. Jane soon falls in love with Mr. Ashford. Although he seems to reciprocate her feelings, their sentiments are not mentioned in their conversations. Moved by his support Jane decides do begin revising Sense and Sensibility.
Sadly, some time after Jane discovers Mr. Ashford has a secret. Jane’s heart is crushed. But even her suffering serves as inspiration for her characters both in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.
But the story doesn’t end at this point. Unfortunately, Jane and her Mr. Ashford never marry. But Jane could indeed live a love story with her beloved, who proved to be an honorable and sensible man.

Oi gente!

Book Review - Death Comes to Pemberley

Title: Death Comes to Pemberley
Author: P.D. James

About: In their six years of marriage, Elizabeth and Darcy have forged a peaceful, happy life for their family at Pemberley, Darcy’s impressive estate. Her father is a regular visitor; her sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; the marriage prospects for Darcy’s sister, Georgiana, are favorable. And preparations for their annual autumn ball are proceeding apace. But on the eve of the ball, chaos descends. Lydia Wickham, Elizabeth’s disgraced sister who, with her husband, has been barred from the estate, arrives in a hysterical state—shrieking that Wickham has been murdered.  Plunged into frightening mystery and a lurid murder trial, the lives of Pemberley’s owners and servants alike may never be the same.

My book summary:
Hey everyone!
If you are a fan of P&P this book is a must have!
Being published on the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice this novel is a mix of Jane Austen’s writing style and detective fiction.
The novel begins six years after the wedding of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. They are living happily in Pemberley with their two children and Georgiana Darcy. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Mr. Bingey, live nearby; her father often visits them; and they are happy with the prospect of Georgiana getting married. They are making preparations for the famous annual ball and because of that, everyone in the house is happy and busy.
Then, on the eve of the ball the weather is terrible and it rains a lot. Suddenly, after super a coach arrives at Pemberley carrying Lydia who is hysterically stumbles out of the carriage saying that Wickham has been murdered in the woods of Pemberley. From one minute to another, all the peace, calm and happiness of Pemberley is replaced by violence and evil.
Immediately a thorough investigation of the crime starts. Darcy leads a search party out to the woodlands, and when they discover the blood-smeared corpse not of Wickham, but his traveling companion. The questions that arise at Pemberley are: Who and why would have brutally killed a young army officer? Would Wickham be capable of killing his own friend, maybe his only friend?
P.D. James is a terrific writer who, inspired by a lifelong passion for Austen, was perfectly able to re-create the world of Pride and Prejudice making it an electrifying story full of mystery and suspense.

Northanger Abbey

                                                                Northanger Abbey
Northanger Abbey is one of the amazing works of Jane Austen, which was published posthumously in 1817. The story takes place in Bath and criticizes the gothic novels so common at the time. The heroine of the story is called Catherine Morland and is an avid reader of novels that take place in dark castles full of mystery and suspense.
Catherine eventually confuses reality and imagination in some situations. But throughout her stay at Northenger Abbey she learns that reality is not always like her novels. She learns she must not assign defects and even inappropriate attitudes to people intuitively just because she could live amazing adventures if everything she imagined of people was real. Only after suffering a harsh disappointment she faces reality and it makes her grow up to maturity.
I could see that the work as a whole is very interesting and you can see that not only the character was going through a maturing process, but also the author. In works published later you may notice a greater and greater refinement in the style of the characters and the plot itself.
Thus it is possible to reflect on the influence of what we read in our own conduct. Too much reading can lead someone without maturity as young Catherine Morland to imagine things beyond what is real. On the other hand too little or no reading can lead to a lack of imagination. Think of it, how much and what are you reading? How does what you read affect you?

More about Jane Austen’s writing style:
The irony is present in most of the works of Jane Austen, but is even more evident in the work in analysis, perhaps because it is one of her earliest publications, I guess.
In a few moments you can sort her irony is a kind of black humor as in the following passage: "She had three children before the birth of Catherine, and instead of dying in bringing the latter into the world, as would be expected, went live - live to have six children. " You do not see such expressions in his other works.
Try reading it yourself and try to find out more about her writing style!

Have a good reading day,

Terça em outra língua: Densha Otoko

Título: Densha Otoko.
Autores: Hitori Nakano.
Ilustrador: Wataru Watanabe.
Editora: CMX.

Book Summary - Persuasion

Book: Persuasion
Author: Jane Austen
By Collector's Library

Hey guys, I'm back and today you'll have a little of one of my favorite books. I hope you enjoy it! Please, don't forget to comment and share!

This is Jane Austen’s final novel. She completed this book in August 1816. It is the story of Anne Elliot who seven years later prior to the book’s event fell in love with an officer to whom she got engaged with. Frederick Wentworth seemed perfect for her but, unfortunately, he was poor. Because of that she was persuaded by her family and her older friend and mentor, Lady Russel, to break the engagement off. They believed Mr. Wentworth was not a suitable match.

The story begins with their trying to find a way to solve their economical problems. Anne’s father is a very proud and praises vanity. Because of that they spend excessive amounts of money. Anne, on the other hand, is simple and sensible. Anne’s elder sister has a temperament very similar to her father’s. Because of this, Anne is overlooked and sometimes even taken for granted by them. The solution for their financial problem is on moving to another house, in Bath. Admiral Croft and his wife, Wentworth’s sister, rented Kellynch Hall.

As her sister and father establish in the new house, Anne goes to Uppercross Hall in order to visit her sister Mary, whom is married to Charles Musgrove. Mary wants people’s attention all the time and requested Anne’s visit due to her state of being often a little unwell.

At Uppercross Anne meet Wentworth again, who has a considerable fortune now. Both Charles’ sisters are attracted to Wentworth and he gives constant attention to the sisters. The Musgroves and the Crofs always wonder which of the sisters will be the chosen one. In the meanwhile, Anne suffers due to the broken off of her engagement with Wentworth.

After some time, Wentworth decides to visit a friend, Captain Harville, in Lyme and invite the Musgroves, including Anne, to go with him. While they were walking in Lyme, Louisa falls, due to her improper behavior toward Wentworth. People think she’s dead and Anne administrates first aid.

Fortunately, Louisa is not dead but needs special cares. Wentworth is impressed by Anne’s attention and how she cares and helps Louisa. He notices he still loves her even still being hurt for what had happened to their engagement. He decides to go away in order of not raising useless feelings in Louisa. In this meanwhile, his friend, Captain Benwick, keep in the same house with Louisa and they get a closer relationship while she recovers. For the surprise of all, they got engaged.
Meanwhile, Mr. William Elliot, Anne’s cousin and the heir of Sir Walter, got reacquainted with the Elliots, after a long time being a stranger to them due to a married with a woman of much lower social rank. Mr. William Elliot is a widower now and in order to inherit Sir Walter’s title he gets closer to Anne. He wants to marry her. Pretty soon, rumors runs that they are engaged.

Without knowing exactly what was going on Wentworth wrote Anne a letter telling her his real feelings and intentions toward her. After reading the letter and talking to him Anne and Wentworth reconcile and renew their engagement. At this time Anne was persuaded of never letting him go anymore. She was quite determined and nobody would let her lose this second chance of living a true love in everlasting happiness.
